Grey Randoms

Baby Grey is getting very big/old! A few milestones since school has started...he cut his first tooth, and he can sit up by himself for extended periods of time! His tooth is still very small, but you def. see/ feel it. It's very sharp! Also he LOVES sitting up and playing with his basket of toys, although he does sometimes still fall over, but then he just plays on his belly. He is a very happy baby as usual, but still has his moments. I think now that the tooth is out he is much happier. Here are some pics...

Grey did get his first cold last week. He had a lot a snot issues and one night with a fever...poor guy. He is much better now though (notice the snot bubble in his left nostril)

One morning earlier this week, Grey woke up around the same time we did, so I moved him into our bed while we got ready for school. One minute he was playing, the next he was doing this...guess he was still tired.

Best Buds Part III

First tooth! Hard to see due to the flash of the camera, but it's the blurry white spot inside the circle. (if you can't find the circle, the green arrow is pointing to it...if you can't find the green arrow then I can't help you)

A typical nightly scene at the CC's. Dad is tired, Grey is not. Story of our lives.

Grey loves his excersaucer so much!

He also loves things that aren't supposed to be toys...like coasters!

He is so good at sitting up all by himself now!

He also likes to sit up and play with his blue coaster.

Grey in daycare/ the saddest day of mama's life

Grey in his car seat, in the morning on his way to his first day of daycare.

Also by request, I will tell you a bit about Grey at daycare. We started him last Monday, the day before our first required day of work. I was a wreck the whole weekend before; even now I get sad thinking about how Grey spends his days without me. Anyways, we had visited our daycare center a lot of times before, so when we dropped Grey off he would be familiar with the sounds and toys. Grey had a really good first day - he took all of his bottles wonderfully and he wasn't cranky at all. I had nightmares that when it came to nap time, they would just put him in the crib and leave him to cry himself to sleep. However, he has been doing amazing with his naps - the very first nap, he fell asleep in Mr. Damon's arms (something he rarely does anymore) and Mr. Damon says that now he goes down almost the second he puts him in the crib. And, yesterday and today, he took a 2.5 and then a 3 hour nap!!! He must be comfortable there :).
Our center does cloth diapers for us, which has saved us a TON of money. They also are very flexible with the breastmilk bottles and homemade food we bring. They usually supply everything except diapers (formula, food, wipes, etc), so sometimes I think they feel bad that we do so much "work" because they always wash our bottles and food containers! They even packed our bag for us today with the cloth diaper bag and all of the washed containers. They are very thoughtful and kind with every aspect of childcare.
Anyways, to continue through last week, Grey struggled after his great Monday start. He wasn't fussy or cranky, he just wouldn't eat his bottles. Mr. Damon said he didn't even cry as if terribly hungry, he just didn't eat them. He would push the bottle away, and get mad until you sat him up to play. I worried and worried and worried about this, and called a million times during the day to see if he ate, and each time they would have the same answer - he didn't eat, but he isn't fussy at all. (BTW I read about this- how some babies wait to nurse by treating the day like it is night and not eating for 9-10 hours, then they nurse during the night as if it is the daytime). So, after only eating 2 or so ounces per day out of the 15 I was giving them, Mr. Damon started trying different nipples on our bottles to see if that would work. Sure enough, he now likes a newborn flow, very very soft nipple. So weird!! But, that is how he eats now, so we will go with it! He takes all of his food and bottles perfectly, and actually, Mr. Damon says he is the best solid food eater out of the bunch.
Now he is recognizing things at daycare - his favorite train that makes animal sounds, the big mirror he can sit in front of, and Mr. Damon, his main caretaker. I call twice a day to check on him, and each time Mr. Damon gets someone to cover his kids so he can tell me how Grey is doing. Each day we get a report on what Grey did that day. Many days, his daily report will say what books they read, or what songs they sang, but a few times his report will end with, "... but most of all, I had fun just sitting and watching all the other kids." I guess all his likes to do is sit up and watch everyone else crawl and play! So cute, it reminds me of how Gemma used to sit and watch the kids go in circles at the Curl house.
Also, Mr. Damon will either tell us or write in his report what they did that day to make Grey laugh. I guess he and the girl teachers from the 0-6 month side of the room always either play or sing or dance to get Grey to laugh because they love to hear him laugh so much (he now does the big, deep full-belly laugh that is like a real little person laugh).
As the days pass, I get more and more comfortable dropping him off in the morning. It is still hard for me to think about someone else feeding him, or playing with him. But, I really love our center, and I know that he is well taken care of.

Bonus Grey pic: Look how strong I am!

Mary's Students' Test Scores

Mom has been bugging me for a while to post about this, so here you go!

OK, I am going to boast on here because I can!! :) The state of Colorado recognizes two ways to "grade" teachers: number of students proficient or advanced (old way), and growth of students (new way). It is always difficult in the area where our school is located to be graded on the number of students scoring proficient or advanced since so many of our students don't come to us proficient. So, in our case, growth more accurately shows the work we are doing (think: we are moving kids two and three grade levels and some are still not proficient or advanced. In the old way, their growth wouldn't matter unless they score proficient or advanced.)
Anyways, each student is given a percentile of where they fall in growth in comparison to other kids in Colorado. Think of the height and weight percentiles that babies get assigned, which compares height and weight against others their age. Only, in Colorado, a student earns a percentile based on other kids their age that scored the exact same they did the year before. The state says that "typical" growth (equivalent to one-year's growth) is anywhere from 33% to 66% (to make it easier, I think 50%, but I guess that is not always the case). Anything above is "exceptional" and anything below is "low."
OK, are you ready for this? I had 70% of my students make exceptional growth!! With the median growth being 78%!!!!!!!!! Meaning that if you lined up all my kids based on their growth, the middle student's growth would be 78%! Meaning that the "average" kid in my class gained the equivalent of two-years growth! I had a good amount earn 99% and 98%, so they "beat" 99% of the students in Colorado who were essentially their peers in 5th grade. Booyah!
This makes me feel so good, especially since I wasn't there the five weeks before the test. It proves that it is not what you teach, but how you teach. I could have had my maternity leave sub make them memorize dozens of formulas and all of the fraction/decimal/percent equivalents, but it isn't about that. It's about teaching kids how to think, how to be critical problem solvers and how to approach any problem in a systematic manner.
Yeah for my group last year!!! I can't wait to try and do it again this year :)

PS- I don't know if you remember, but I had similar results last year. But I think my median growth percentile was 82% last year.

6 month Check-Up

Grey went in this past Wednesday for his 6 month check-up! Hard to believe we are already taking him to this! He had checked out fine...he actually went a little bit down in his height percentage...our doctor said the system they were suing before was not entirely accurate, so he went from the 90th percentile to the 70th percentile. I think it's just the Cooper genes kicking in already...darn. He was very happy throughout the appointment, but we forgot he was due for his vaccinations! So we ended the day on a bad note. He was actually pretty affected by them this time, slept a lot and had his first fever! Boooo on shots. We don't have to worry about them for another 6 months now though. Below are a few pics from the day!

Good heart rate

He had a crush on our nurse

Still loves mirrors

16lbs 7.6 ounces

Happy baby

Kennedys in Colorado: The Finale

Well the Kennedys left this past Wednesday. It went by sooo fast! We finished up their trip with a small hike to beautiful St. Mary's Glacier. None of us had been there before, and can't wait to get back! Mary also traveled with them up to Rocky Mountain National Park and went on the old road through the park (no pics though...oops). Then we ended up having a large party at Erica and Carters...we made sushi, and lettuce wraps. The food was crazy good! We had so much fun, and can't wait til they come back out to CO! Thanks for making us a part of your summer Kennedys! Miss you already!

Kennedys in Colorado: Two 14ers!

On Sunday while the Kennedys were visiting, Erica (with Emmadog), Justin, Stephanie (Joe's gf), Amy, Chris, Tim, Krista, and some of their friends decided to head up into the mountains to Climb Gray's (not Grey's) and Torrey's peaks. The 2 peaks are both over 14,000 feet above sea level and connected by about a mile long "saddle" in between. We had a BEAUTIFUL day of hiking! The weather was perfect, and we had a great time climbing!

All of us at the top of one of them

I came to this rock pile in hope that it was the 14'er...but no, its the 2 giant peaks in the back. damn.

Self-Portrait

Top of Gray's Peak: 14, 270ft

Siblings and Emmadog

I call this my "at the top green mitten dance". Thanks Grandma Cooper for keeping me warm at such great heights!

A little out of order, but Timmy and I not even close to the top

Top of Torrey's Peak: 14, 267 ft.

One the final pushes before the top of Torrey's. That's not daunting at all.

Here's what Mary did with the girls while we were hiking...swimming at Auntie Jen's pool!
Good job buddy Grey
